Leap Of Faith
Steve Martin was born to play the role of Jonas Nightingale, a seedy, cynical, but energetic evangelist and bogus faith healer who takes his 'Angels of Mercy' showbiz extravaganza around America's South and mid-West.
This film loses its way at the end, but is well worth watching for the first half or so, in which Nightingale finds his hi-tech roadshow stranded in small, drought-stricken Rustwater, Kansas: "corn relish capital of the world".
Debra Winger and Liam Neeson also give fine performances in this Nineties version of Elmer Gantry, directed at road-runner pace by Richard Pearce.
