Keira Knightley leads the British challenge for this year's Golden Globes after being nominated for her first award.
The 20-year-old's performance as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride And Prejudice has seen her listed in the best actress in a musical or comedy section.
But she faces competition from another British star, 70-year-old Dame Judi Dench, nominated for her starring role in Mrs Henderson Presents. The other nominees are
American actresses Laura Linney, Sarah Jessica Parker and Reese Witherspoon.
Miss Knightley, pictured yesterday, said: "Just to have your name mentioned in the same breath as other nominees is pretty amazing. I'm sure I won't win, but it's nice to be recognised in this way."
The Golden Globes are often seen as an indicator of what will happen at the Oscars.
Other British nominees include Dame Judi's co-star Bob Hoskins, who is named in the best supporting actor category. Rachel Weisz is a contender for best supporting actress section for her role in the thriller The Constant Gardener.
In the TV section, Britain's Polly Walker was nominated for her part in the BBC-HBO drama Rome.
Hugh Laurie is a contender for best TV actor for the American medical drama House.
Kelly MacDonald and Bill Nighy are nominated in the best actress and actor in a mini-series or TV film category for the BBC TV film The Girl In The Cafe.
