Long before the East End became a mecca for art students and Gilbert & George, the Whitechapel Art Gallery was attracting huge numbers of visitors and exhibitors.
Despite its off-the-beaten-track location, it was the first gallery to show Picasso's 'Guernica', and even became a centre of anti-Fascist debate in the Thirties.
Tonight, Richard Coles treks to the East End to celebrate the gallery's centenary and take a look at what has contributed to its continuing success.
