Based on the play The Fragile Fox by Norman Brooks, this account of incompetence at the Battle of the Bulge is so unflinching that the US Defense Department refused to assist its makers, and the American ambassador walked out of a screening at the Venice Film Festival.
Robert Aldrich's powerful Second World War film stars Eddie Albert as Captain Erskine Cooney, whose cowardice results in heavy loss of life among his troops, while his colonel (Lee Marvin) covers for him. Fellow officer Lieutenant Joe Costa (Jack Palance) is so enraged by Cooney that he resolves to murder him.
