Jazz File:
Central Avenue Sounds
In this new series, Alyn Shipton remembers the time when Los Angeles' now-nondescript Central Avenue was the jazz hub of America's west coast.
From the Twenties until the Fifties, Central Avenue was where all the visiting big bands stayed, close to the recording studios established there, and where dozens of Californian musicians started their careers.
Among those who recall the Avenue's glory days are trumpeter Gerald Wilson, who played in Dizzy Gillespie's big band, and saxophonist Teddy Edwards.
The series also features some glorious music from a host of great names, including Jelly Roll Morton, Lionel Hampton, Nat King Cole (pictured) and Charlie Parker.
As Shipton explains, this musical heritage has inspired one of the largest oral history projects in the world, which is currently being conducted by the University of California.
