Shock at Lulu's spitting image

It was, one hopes, only a fleeting lapse of good manners.

Even so, neighbours who saw Lulu spitting out her chewing gum in a West London street would have been justified in letting out a shout of protest.

The singer - with tousled hair and loose-fitting blouse and trousers - completely spoiled the fashionably cool look by projecting the gum onto the pavement yards from a friend's house in Kensington.

The 54-year-old, who had been shopping for flowers, did not seem to notice the residents who watched the incident in disgust.

Lulu, who employs a personal trainer and is meticulous about what she eats, is normally obsessional about her image.

An onlooker said: "She got out of her car looking quite glamorous and led her dog to a friend's house.

"She walked back to the car to get a beautiful bouquet from the back seat.

"Then it all went downhill. She suddenly spat this piece of gum onto the pavement and walked calmly on, not caring about the fact she was littering.

"Quite a few of the neighbours saw it happen. We don't see much of that sort of behaviour round here."
