Timewatch
Was Emperor Nero quite the mad hedonist portrayed by Hollywood and popular history? Timewatch suggests not.
For one, he wasn't fiddling while Rome burned; he wasn't even in town at the time.
This edition of the intermittently fascinating documentary strand attempts to recreate Nero's Domus Aurea, his vast Golden House, built in the wake of the fire, using computer graphics and expert testimony.
An elaborate complex of palaces, pavilions and temples was planned to surround it, but the costs crippled Nero both financially and politically, even if his workforce surely appreciated the job creation.
