Narc (Cert 18)
by CHRISTOPHER TOOKEY, Daily Mail
A sense of black humour might not have gone amiss in the impressively intense but not very enjoyable cop thriller Narc.
The deadly dull Jason Patric plays a narcotics detective who teams up with a violent and possibly insane cop (Ray Liotta, bulkier than before, and at his most menacing) to find the killers of another cop, who has left behind an adorable family.
The film has grittiness and energy, and the atmosphere of an urban hell is pleasantly - or perhaps I should say unpleasantly - reminiscent of David Fincher's Seven. Writer-director Joe Carnahan looks an interesting prospect.
Unfortunately, the story and characters are nowhere near gripping enough. The final twist isn't logical in the light of Liotta's behaviour during the rest of the picture.
And there's nothing in the picture, in the form of insights into cop degradation, that you won't have seen many times before.
