The world reeled in disbelief on August 16, 1977 when they learned the prolific entertainer and songwriter was dead.
Some fans refused to believe the news, pointing to an unusual spelling of Elvis's middle name on his gravestone and an incorrect weight entered on his death certificate as evidence that he'd faked his own death.
Over the past two decades there have been numerous 'sightings' of The King and even today some fans are adamant he's still alive - some even placing bets.
A spokesman for William Hill said: 'We have just taken a bet of £50 at odds of 1000/1 that Elvis is still alive from an East London client and we take scores of fiver and tenner bets each year on the same theme.'
Elvis has sold about one billion records worldwide and, according to Forbes magazine, is still one of the world's top earners, amassing around £24 million in the last year alone.
A total of 131 of his records earnt gold, platinum or multi-platinum status and he is the only musician ever to be admitted to the Rock Hall of Fame, the Country Hall of Fame and the Gospel Hall of Fame.
Long live the King!
