Devdas (Cert PG)
by JULIE MYERSON, Mail on Sunday
'You look like a real Englishman!' exclaim the family of the eponymous hero of Devdas, when he returns home to India from ten years in London.
Childhood playmate Paro has been holding a candle for him all these years. But his family force him to reject this trembling beauty and as Devdas sinks into misery (and the arms of a willing courtesan), The Most Expensive Indian Film Ever Made glitters and warbles on for three long hours.
The lumbering, exclamatory Bollywood acting style will never do anything for me, but there's something touchingly Busby Berkeley-ish about the long, gorgeously ecstatic dance numbers.
