Devdas (Cert PG)
by ALEXANDER WALKER, Evening Standard
A lavish production, filled with cues for song and dance, adapted at epic length from Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's 1917 novel.
Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) comes back from a posh schooling in England, makes the mistake of looking in on his childhood sweetheart Paro (Aishwarya Rai) before his snobby mum, then falls in with an infamous courtesan (Madhuri Dixit).
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has had a rajah's budget to work with; but at three hours, even it is perhaps a little over-stretched. The Bollywood version of Pride and Petulance.
