The patter of tiny Cold Feet
by Adam Powell, DAILY MAIL
Cold Feet actor John Thomson and his fiancee are expecting their first child.
The news is a double delight for the star of the popular ITV drama because it comes only weeks before the couple were due to start IVF treatment after fears of infertility.
The relationship between Thomson, 32, and girlfriend Sam Sharp hit the rocks after he admitted cheating on her with two female fans.
And last New Year's Eve he was taken to hospital with a gashed arm after a huge argument.
But the couple patched things up and now Miss Sharp, an interior designer, is due to give birth in November.
Thomson, who plays Pete Gifford in Cold Feet, said: 'It's been a total bolt from the blue.
'We thought we couldn't have children so we were preparing for the fertility course when suddenly it just happened.
'Now I can't wait - in fact, I'd like to have three, although I think Sam might want to stop at two. We don't know whether it's going to be a boy or girl and I think we'll keep it as another surprise.'
The couple, who have a home in the fashionable Didsbury area of Manchester, plan to marry next May at the trendy Babington House hotel in Somerset.
Thomson has spoken lovingly of his fiancee, saying: 'She's a lot like me - mad, outgoing, lives life to the full. I'm very happy at the moment and Sam has a lot to do with that.'
But in February it emerged that last year he had invited two fans back to his hotel room in Australia after filming episodes of Cold Feet there.
He met the women at a party. 'I was stupid and I wish it hadn't happened,' he said later. 'I'd had a lot of champagne, but that's not an excuse for letting them into my hotel room.'
On his return to Britain he confessed to Miss Sharp and the couple had several blazing rows.
It culminated on New Year's Eve at the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
Thomson said: 'We started rowing in the bar and then went to our room where it continued into the small hours.
'Drink played its part, as did high emotions. I was angry with myself and she was angry with me.
'I eventually fell asleep, woke in the small hours to go to the toilet and tripped and fell on a champagne glass.'
Thomson was treated for a swelling caused by haemorrhaging from a deep laceration.
Miss Sharp said: 'I felt the only way to retain any dignity was to end the relationship.
'I don't know what made me change my mind. I suppose I realised then that I really did love him and that things could have been worse.'
Filming on the fifth series of Cold Feet starts in July.
