This fluffy romantic comedy is directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses) and has endured longer than anyone might have expected when it was released back in 2009. The film's star is Sandra Bullock - a justifiable giant in the romcom sphere - and that's a big part of why. She plays a feisty Canadian who learns that her visa to work in the US isn't being renewed, so decides to coerce her American PA (Ryan Reynolds, then in his pre-tycoon days) into marriage so she can stay.
Were such a film made today that situation might raise eyebrows but The Proposal just bowls cheerily along, cutting a not dissimilar path to the Andie MacDowell- Gérard Depardieu romcom Green Card from 1990. It hails from a golden era for this kind of film at the cinema, and that's also probably part of why it still has such charm. (108 minutes)
