Children don't usually fully understand their parents, especially when they're young. That idea sits underneath the script for She Rides Shotgun, a lean American thriller filmed in grainy, old-school style and starring Taron Egerton as an ex-con dad who shows up to collect his daughter out of the blue. All is not as fine as he tells her it is, and the road trip they go on is a kind of dark bonding experience, one that you can't be sure he will survive - you can't be sure her innocence will survive it, either, but what price will her dad pay to keep that alive?
She Rides Shotgun has that ring of authenticity that's hard to quantify but, as a viewer, you know it when you see it. Egerton has the physicality and the conflicted soul for the role down pat, while Ana Sophia Heger is pitch perfect as his daughter, and you find yourself rooting for the pair.
The movie can be pretty violent - Egerton's character has crosshairs on his back from his time in prison - especially towards the end, but the twisted father-daughter bond at its centre makes the movie whole and, ultimately, hopeful. (122 minutes)
