You don't need to have seen the original Tron to make sense of this blockbuster sequel about computer programs come to life, but it sure helps make sense of some of the details - such as who Jeff Bridges' Jesus-like character is, why the insides of computers look like the 1980s, and lots of little other Easter eggs besides.

Tron: Ares actually feels weirdly timely, imagining as it does what would happen if intelligent computer programs run by arrogant humans suddenly started walking around on our planet, making decisions for themselves. Jared Leto stars as Ares, a military program that develops an affinity for rain in his limited stints on Earth (Blade Runner, anyone?) and finds he wants to do more than follow orders. Leto is a deadpan, Messiah-like presence in the movie, co-starring with Greta Lee (The Morning Show) as a CEO who wants to use tech for the better - unlike her evil rival, Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters).

That premise fuels nearly two hours of blockbuster action, with a pulsing soundtrack courtesy of Nine Inch Nails and a consistently dazzling stream of visuals both making sure there's something to absorb the senses in every scene. The diverse supporting cast includes Brit Jodie Turner-Smith as Ares' tough lieutenant, Athena, and Gillian Anderson in a slightly thankless role as Julian's mum. (119 minutes)
