Belén: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Powerful drama based on the true story of how abortion became legal in Argentina
Year: 2025
Certificate: 15
Based on a true story, this powerful drama from Argentina stars Dolores Fonzi as Soledad Deza, a well-dressed, hard-smoking lawyer who doesn't take no for an answer. Deza becomes involved in the case of Julieta Gomez, a woman who had a miscarriage but was then thrown in prison because the police thought she'd had an abortion, a procedure that was illegal in Argentina outside cases of rape or endangerment of the mother until 2020. The film follows Gomez's case as it comes up against the corruption of the system before becoming a broader movement and, eventually, leading to change.
Fonzi also co-wrote the screenplay and directed the movie, which moves with a quiet sense of urgency right from its very first frame, a sensation it somehow never truly relaxes. The film convinces you of its importance without ever having to explain itself, just part of the reason that it was selected as Argentina's entry for the 2026 Oscars. The title, Belén, comes from the pseudonym Deza uses for Gomez in the film, to try to prevent her from becoming a target in prison. (108 minutes)
