An American Werewolf In London: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
The cult horror comedy about a transformative night on the Yorkshire Moors, directed by John Landis
Year: 1981
Certificate: 15
John Landis, a director best known for his comedy films (Trading Places, Three Amigos, The Blues Brothers) was also behind this cult horror comedy classic starring David Naughton and Griffin Dunne.
The plot follows two American backpackers as they walk the Yorkshire Moors and stray into local pub The Slaughtered Lamb - a place they then leave in a hurry after upsetting some intimidating locals. It's a scene that's been much riffed on in popular culture since, and wasn't actually shot in Yorkshire but at the Black Swan pub near Ockham, in leafy Surrey.
A deadly and transformative encounter follows for the duo and a howlingly good romp of a film takes off from there, featuring some very special effects that scooped the film its only Oscar - which was also the first-ever Academy gong for Best Makeup. Landis went on to direct the video for Michael Jackson's Thriller and returned to Britain nearly three decades later to helm the 2010 horror comedy Burke & Hare. (97 minutes)
