Taggart: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Catch up with the king of the Scottish cops, played by Mark McManus
Year: 1983-2010
Certificate: 12
Originally a three-part mini-series, this detective drama - shown in 1983 under the title Killer - was so well received that a new series was commissioned straight away and it returned to our screens under the name Taggart, ultimately running for 27 series until 2010.
Lots of shows chop and change with time, but Taggart tops the lot by carrying on for another 16 series after losing its leading man (a famously heavy drinker, Mark McManus died in 1994 of an alcohol-related illness) at the end of the 11th, with his character given the honour of an on-air funeral.
Set in the working-class district of Glasgow's Maryhill, it has sharp dialogue that includes some gentle antagonism between the ashtray-faced Taggart and his fresh young sidekick DS Livingstone (Neil Duncan), with Blythe Duff as Jackie Reid holding her own and rising through the ranks from WPC to DI. (27 series)
