Even now, so many years after its original release, Steven Spielberg's reworking of Michael Crichton's cautionary tale still makes an impression. The moment when the T-rex emerges through the de-electrified fence, emitting a terrible roar, is as gripping as ever (remember the rippling glass of water, much mimicked since) and, if you can ignore the shaky science and accept that the whole thing is a wild fantasy, it's a superb ride.

Among the cast, Jeff Goldblum provides light relief as an eccentric black-clad chaos theorist, while Sam Neill and Laura Dern are a nice, almost romcom-style pair as the dino experts brought in to inspect Richard Attenborough's park. What's perhaps most impressive about the film around them is how well the CGI has held up, considering how quickly things move in that arena. The Jurassic World sequel trilogy might be more technologically advanced, but Jurassic Park still has more than enough charm and thrills to merit a visit. (127 minutes)
