Tom Hanks explores his darker side in Sam Mendes's atmospheric, Depression-set thriller - which employs every trick in the noir catalogue to look like a host of old-time gangster movies, but is actually based on Max Allan Collins's graphic novel of the same name.

It's a violent story of betrayal and redemption, with Hanks as the mob enforcer who experiences life on the other side after his unsuspecting son (Tyler Hoechlin) witnesses a hit gone wrong. Thinking that he himself is beyond salvation, Hanks has gone to great lengths to keep his profession from his son, but that veil of secrecy has now been lifted and as the pair are forced on the run together, their previously cold relationship develops in unexpected ways.

Road To Perdition is a strong father-son story that looks and feels like an old Hollywood throwback in the best sense of that term, and was rewarded at the Oscars accordingly - taking home the award for Best Cinematography out of six nominations. Look out for Jude Law, Daniel Craig and an Oscar-nominated Paul Newman on the strong supporting cast. (117 minutes)
