No cameras are allowed inside the trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs, so US streamer Hulu have come up with a way round that: hiring a full cast of actors to dramatise events inside and rolling out episodes weekly, interspersing the courtroom scenes in every edition with comment from 'a rotating team of experts', all of it corralled by Sunny Hostin, no-nonsense co-host of The View and also, handily, a former federal prosecutor.

It's being shown here on Disney+ and the result is oddly compelling, in part because of how quickly all this has presumably had to come together. The actor hired to play Combs looks nothing like him, the woman playing his lawyer feels deliberately villainous and the judge appears to be mildly amused by everything. That side of the production can feel self-parodical, but where the series balances that out is in the actress hired to play Diddy's ex, Cassie Ventura, whose testimony feels genuinely emotional and makes you remember how horribly real all this is for the people involved.

The series ran alongside the trial, with new episodes each week. For the Mail's podcast coverage of events in The Trial Of Diddy, go here
