This 'adorkable' US romantic sitcom follows kooky Jess (Zooey Deschanel), who breaks up with her cheating boyfriend then begins a new life in a Los Angeles loft with a supportive group of guys. She tells them all her friends are models, and they snap her up instantly - but when she moves in and spends a lot of time crying in front of Dirty Dancing, they think they've made a terrible mistake.
You may think so too as, on the surface, Jess looks like the kind of quirkily helpless, not-so-secretly beautiful geeky male fantasy of a character that irritates plenty of women. (There's even a term for it: the 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl'.) Deschanel has a lot of charm as this hopeful character, though, and the bond she forges with these awkward men over the seven series feels real, and earned. It's a cute and quick-witted show that's designed to leave you happier than it finds you, and says goodbye to its characters in a thoughtful way by the end. (Seven series)
