How I Met Your Mother ran from 2005 to 2014, and was essentially a nine-series romcom. It told us, in flashback, the story of how a couple came together across years of misadventures in New York, and was framed as a dad telling the story back to his children. It reminded people of Friends and was a huge success, so following it wasn't easy - but spin-off sequel How I Met Your Father had a pretty solid stab at it in series one. Ex-Disney star Hilary Duff is a likeably clueless presence as girl-about-town Sophie, ricocheting from relationship to relationship with the help or often hindrance of her gang of friends, with Kim Cattrall as the older Sophie in the future sequences that bookend each episode.
Series one squeezed in a cameo from How I Met Your Mother and Marvel star Cobie Smulders, but prepare for the return of a host of familiar faces in the first eleven episodes of series two, not least a glimpse of Neil Patrick Harris's legendary wildman Barney Stinson. (Two series)
