When a dead body is discovered on the beach in the sleepy Australian town of Deadloch, Senior Sergeant Dulcie Collins (Picnic At Hanging Rock's Kate Box) is surprised to find herself landed with the case - at least until the lead detective, described as 'some cowboy from Darwin', arrives to take over.
Surprise is the watchword for Deadloch as a whole. The series looks like a Scandi noir but what you hear is a steady stream of dry-witted gags, riffing on everything from what we expect of TV crime dramas (hardbitten male mavericks and female victims), to the charming eccentricities of small town life: in one scene, we learn the forensic pathologist can't do the autopsy because 'he's on a bike ride'.
It's a really well-written show and the performances have lots of small, nice touches that make the gags just that little bit sharper. All that and Box manages to give it a heart in the lead, too. A second series is on the way. (Eight episodes)
