For all their flaws, you can't help loving some characters - and Rigsby, the creepy landlord played by Leonard Rossiter in this 1970s sitcom, consisted of nothing but flaws. He was lecherous, dishonest, avaricious, bullying, sarcastic and racist, and also deeply lonely.
His boarding-house tenants Richard Beckinsale and Don Warrington, as students Alan and Philip, tried to avoid him, but it was the spinster Ruth (Frances de la Tour) who had to fend him off daily... and sometimes nightly. One quote sums it up. When Alan jeers, 'You know your trouble, Rigsby? You're a social climber,' Rigsby bitterly retorts, 'Yeah? Well, I haven't got very far, have I?' (Four series)
