Kath & Kim: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
The great Aussie comedy about a mother and daughter that became a big international hit
Year: 2002-2022
Certificate: 15
This Australian sitcom follows the day-to-day life of mother and daughter Kath and Kim, played by Jane Turner and Gina Riley - comedians who are about the same age as each other. A big international hit, it ran for four series tracking the pair in suburban Melbourne, where newly married, newly separated Kim is about to move back in with mum Kath.
The show became known for its catchphrases early on - a key example being Kim's 'I want to be effluent, Mum, effluent' - and it did start to rather rely on them later on for laughs, but it was always fun to watch, partly because it was so full of good characters.
Aside from the central duo we have their romantic interests, Kel for Kath and Brett for Kim, but the real standout is Kim's friend Sharon. Played by Magda Szubanski with a brilliance that earned her a huge number of fans across the globe - including Heath Ledger, who nearly played Sharon's stalker on the show - Sharon is both obsessed with sport and wildly accident prone, which is a fundamentally hilarious combination.
Look out for some good guest stars along the way, too, including Matt Lucas (himself no stranger to a catchphrase) as Sharon's hitherto unknown sister from England, and Shane Warne playing a Shane Warne impersonator. You can also find the related films and specials on Netflix, including the 2022 anniversary, but the early series are the best. (Four series)
