Amy Schumer made her name in comedy (see Inside Amy Schumer on Amazon Prime Video), but she's been leaning more into drama as of late. This series fits someone who can do both, which makes sense as Schumer not only wrote and directed it but also stars as Beth, a wine saleswoman who's in denial about her disappointing life and even more disappointing boyfriend.
She drinks - not spectacularly but steadily - in a way that insulates her from everything she'd rather ignore until, in the first of this steadily building ten-parter, something so huge happens that Beth surely can't ignore it. Watch her face at that moment, when she's forced to sing karaoke while dealing with news that hits her like a sledgehammer; it's a terrific bit of acting. The second series picks up in cheerier territory with her and love interest John (Michael Cera) contemplating marriage. (Two series)
