Micky Flanagan: If Ever We Needed It: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Cockney stand-up's show about the sunny side of life
Year: 2024
Certificate: 18
You need a high tolerance for swearing to watch the plain-talking stand-up comedy of Micky Flanagan, but his energy is admirable. The first target he uses it on in this one-hour special, recorded in Cardiff, is Covid - or that 'bit of aggravation' that came along in 2020, an upside of which for him was the anonymity of wearing a mask ('I'm a very famous man, I dunno if you know').
Flanagan is, on the whole, very much about finding the upside to things. The Cockney comic delights in his big house, which he refuses to feel guilty about despite the cost-of-living crisis, and spends a lot of time digging into the quirks of relationships between men and women, and how the former have to spend their whole time walking around apologising for things.
And as for modern sensitivities? He's 'too thick' to be triggered by things, he tells us with glee. It's all crowd-pleasing stuff - the crowd literally sound pleased the whole time - and delivered with the warm but unapologetic punch of a man who's been doing this for a long time. (60 minutes)
