The Great British Bake Off: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Hang out the bunting for the original, biggest and best baking show on TV
Year: 2010-
Certificate: pg
Launching in 2010, this is less a baking contest and more a phenomenon. It made a star out of bread man Paul Hollywood, launched the TV careers of winners including Nadiya Hussain, and rekindled the nation's love affair with butter, cream and sugar - and much more besides. Sales of baking ingredients and accessories have soared since it became an annual fixture on our screens and that shows no sign of cooling off.
In 2017, the show moved to Channel 4 from its original home on the BBC and current presenters Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond are an especially pleasing pair, upbeat and a little bit cheeky, they can definitely put the lightness and air into anyone's sponge. Hollywood has stuck to the show since the beginning, joined by Prue Leith as judge, who replaced National Treasure Mary Berry in the channel switch.
Not only do we get a new series each year for amateur bakers to show off their showstoppers and technical skills, but there's also a celebrity edition for charity and a junior version for young bakers aged nine to 12, never mind the odd festive special. The British version is also popular in America and Canada and, globally, some 40 countries produce their own versions of this high-rising format.
The latest 16th series opens with 12 new bakers getting the competition under way with a Swiss roll for the first Signature challenge - and the judges are expecting a twist in the traditional design... (16 series)
