Former barrister Peter Moffat has brought us some of the most powerful and thought-provoking legal series of recent years. In addition to ensemble dramas North Square and Silk, both set in criminal law chambers, he's the writer behind this acclaimed anthology, which focuses on one person's experience of the criminal justice system in each of the two series.
The first starred Ben Whishaw as Ben, an apparently decent 21-year-old whose life changes for ever one Saturday night when he encounters a beautiful girl and, within hours, finds himself arrested for murder.
The second series starred Maxine Peake, whose pristine family life is clearly not as picture-perfect as it appears on the surface. As well as astute and insightful writing, the performances throughout both series are superb.
And if you enjoy this, there's a US remake of series one, The Night Of, starring Riz Ahmed and John Turturro while there's also Moffat's 2020 legal series, Your Honor, with Bryan Cranston in the lead. (Two series)
