Teaming up with American powerhouse HBO, the BBC pushed the boat out for this spellbinding adaptation of Philip Pullman's dense trilogy of fantasy novels, aimed at younger audiences. With superb special effects and an A-list cast, it paints a vivid picture of a strange new world, a lot like our own except humans have 'daemons' - talking animal companions that are a physical manifestation of the soul.
Our hero is Lyra Belacqua, played by the very talented Dafne Keen, who starred alongside Hugh Jackman in X-Men movie Logan. Lyra embarks on an epic mission to find a lost friend and other kidnapped children, who have been vanishing without trace.
There are big ideas and visuals to match, but it helps to understand it all if you've read Pullman's books - an excuse to get more young people reading is no bad thing. (Three series)
