Played by various actors (but perhaps most notably to English-speakers by Kenneth Branagh on the BBC from 2008 onwards), the grumpy middle-aged policeman who cracked the toughest cases facing the town of Malmo in Sweden is an icon among TV detectives. Which makes the decision to revisit his earlier days in this English-language series quite the challenge.
The show doesn't quite manage to pull the trick off as well as Endeavour did for fans of Morse, but there's still a lot to enjoy about Adam Palsson's turn as the young Kurt, who's learning his way as a copper on the mean streets of modern Sweden. It has to be said that Palsson is also a good deal better looking than most of the older actors to play Wallander, and much more prone to showing off a six pack - for those who find such things important.
