A high-maintenance bride on Married At First Sight broke down in tears during her wedding vows on Tuesday night, after her groom's 'disgusting habit' revealed itself during the ceremony.

Mel Akbay, 28, was exchanging vows with her TV husband Luke Fourniotis, 30, when she noticed that he was doing something that annoyed her as he spoke to her at the altar, which completely soured her mood.

The ceremony had got off to a shaky start as Luke arrived late and made an embarrassing admission to the packed crowd.

'I'm sorry I was late... I forgot the rings,' a red-faced Luke told the crowd, admitting he was delayed because he had to retrieve them.

'This is such a big event in someone's life! How do you mess it up like that?' a frustrated Mel told producers.

'Such a big day for me, I've been thinking about it for months, the experience for me is a bit ruined.'

However, things did not improve, as Mel soon noticed Luke chewing gum while attempting to exchange vows.

'When I was doing my vows, he was chewing gum with his mouth open... I could hear it... It's one thing after another,' an angry Mel vented.

When it came time for Luke to say his vows, he made the shocking admission, 'I've got some gum in my mouth... I might spit that out.'

Luke's sister was then seen handing him a tissue which he dropped the gum into, before resuming his speech.

A shocked Mel expressed her disbelief to producers about Luke's actions: 'He spat it out and gave it to his sister! I actually feel sick to my stomach.'

Mel questioned why Luke made a spectacle of the situation, rather than taking the more obvious solution.

'Just swallow it, like everybody else. All I could think about in the back of my head was that I didn't feel any chemistry,' she said.

The pair finally got married and exchanged an awkward kiss on the cheek, as Mel admitted things were not going according to plan.

MAFS 2026 returned to television screens on Monday night, and the show wasted no time plunging right into controversy.

Married At First Sight has always thrived on chaos, but Channel Nine's 2026 season is already shaping up to be one of the most volatile in the show's history.

'Production has every reason to be p**sed off,' one insider told Daily Mail.

'The night in question completely blew up, cast members disappeared, fights broke out and one couple is already in turmoil.'

It follows last season's curfew crackdown, which saw contestants ordered back to their apartments by 10pm on weeknights and 11pm on weekends, before those times were reportedly tightened again after complaints the cast had become 'disrespectful' and 'selfish' for vanishing mid-shoot.

An explosive leaked email from production expressed 'utter disappointment' in the cast's disregard for crew, warning hotel keycards would be deactivated after curfew unless an associate producer was informed.

Married At First Sight continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine
