A 'masterpiece' spy thriller series hailed by its fans as 'one of the best ever made' has rocketed up the BBC charts 39 years on from its TV debut.

The series, which first aired nearly four decades ago, has been rediscovered by fans who went searching through the archives of shows uploaded to BBC iPlayer.

A Perfect Spy, which was adapted for TV from John Le Carre's novel of the same name, follows Peter Egan as MI6 agent Magnus Pym.

His disappearance comes soon after he is uncovered as a double agent of the Czech secret service - triggering a manhunt across the globe.

Following him from his schooldays into a career of working in the intelligence service, the spy is seen working his way deeply into the world of espionage.

Nominated at the time of its release in the 1980s for an Emmy and a BAFTA, the seven-part series was made available to stream online.

And it's been streaming up the charts since its release, following the second series of The Night Manager hitting screens - a series also based on Le Carre's novels.

Despite first airing in 1987 on BBC Two, fans have been flooding the reviews sites to heap praise on the series as the 'perfect' spy series.

Taking to film and TV database IMDb's reviews section, one penned: 'A masterpiece of storytelling and acting - exquisitely transformed.'

Another chimed in: 'I was surprised to discover that my expectations were exceeded in this miniseries, a fine cross between a spy thriller and a human drama. A Perfect Spy isn't to be missed.'

'This is without doubt my favourite Le Carre novel and it is transformed to the silver screen with all the love and care one could wish for. OUTSTANDING,' someone else wrote.

As another viewer added: 'This is just about a perfect spy story. The whole production showcases the best of a strong era for television drama in the UK.'

Meanwhile, fellow Le Carre based series The Night Manager has been keeping audiences captivated after it returned to screens earlier this month.

Fans were left hot under the collar after tuning in to one of the episodes in its saucy new series on BBC One.

Viewers watched on as leading actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays former British soldier Jonathan Pine in the hit series, performed in what they called his 'sexiest scene' yet.

Tom, 44, returned to screens for the second series of the drama earlier this month after a decade-long break.

The spy thriller follows the soldier in his new role as an intelligence officer, tasked this time with exposing a conspiracy designed to destabilise a nation, led by Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos, played by Diego Calva.

On his new journey, Pine meets Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone), a businesswoman who helps him infiltrate Teddy’s Colombian arms operation.

Through his twisting undercover journey, Pine is plunged deep into the deadly plot involving the arming and training of a guerrilla army.

And in an unexpected turn, Pine finds himself at the centre of a love triangle between Roxana, and the leader of the guerrilla army, Teddy.

Fans were left in shock as the trio found themselves sharing a passionate dance in the new third episode, calling it the 'sexiest scene of the decade.'

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to react, one penned, sharing a clip of the dance scene: 'The sexiest scene of the decade possibly the century.'

A second chimed in: 'The sexual tension between Pine & Teddy is maaadddd! One kiss, just give us one passionate kiss!'

'Huge fan of spy shows suddenly,' a third joked, while a fourth penned: 'This scene was incredible. The chemistry was amazing, the cinematography, the sexiness.'

'So much chemistry it’s off the charts!' a fifth added, while a sixth agreed of the action: 'That scene was so HOT.'

It comes after the show's fans gushed that series two of the BBC show is the 'perfect Bond audition tape' for Tom and called out plot for being the same as Licence To Kill.

Viewers took to X to comment on how they thought the series was unfolding, comparing the plot to the 1989 Timothy Dalton movie.

While Daniel Craig's replacement for the 007 is yet to be announced, many now believe Tom would be the perfect leading man, with The Night Manager as the 'perfect' audition for the role.

One wrote on X: 'The Night Manager episode two very good. Quite LeCarre, but mostly half the plot of Licence to Kill. Which is just a reminder how good (and how ahead of it's time) LTK is/was.'

'I said it when it was out and I still maintain it. Night Manager is Tom Hiddleston's audition for Bond and I think it's successful,' a second added.
