ITV viewers 'terrified' by period horror series that 'just gets scarier with every episode' - raving that 'it's right up there with the best of the genre'

ITV is streaming a period horror series this October that's been praised by 'terrified' viewers as being 'the best of the genre'.

Aptly named The Terror, it is based on the doomed 1845 Franklin Expedition, which descended into cannibalism after its two ships, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, became trapped by Arctic ice.

Prior to this disaster striking, which ultimately left no survivors, the group was attempting to locate the Northwest Passage - the main route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The show is a fictionalised account of events from the point of view of Captain Sir John Franklin as the explorers succumb to starvation and cannibalism - all while being haunted by a malevolent force.

The show's synopsis on ITVX reads: 'Ridley Scott’s eerie anthology returns - has evil crossed the ocean?

'Malevolent forces haunt a community confined to one of America's WWII internment camps.'

The Terror has had an impressive reception, with an IMDb score of 7.8/10 and a whopping approval rating of 87 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

It is based on a horror novel by author Dan Simmons of the same name.

The story is told across 20 binge-worthy episodes starring Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies and Ciarán Hinds.

The show is so scary that it has also been a topic of discussion in the Reddit's Horror subreddit, which has a whopping three million members.

One asked: 'So just finished The Haunting of Hill House again, just looking for something else now to watch. What, in your opinion, is the most terrifying TV series?'

Several Reddit users went on to recommend The Terror as a must-watch, with the following comment receiving 40 upvotes: 'The Terror, season 1. F***ing horrifying.

'Episode one has some really chilling moments, and it just gets scarier from there.'

The show first aired in 2018 and 2019, but it was revived this year after leaving a lasting impression on viewers.

A verified IMDb viewer, who gave the show nine out of ten stars, wrote: 'Going into the series with no expectations or impressions from the novel, and barely reading about the series at all before binge watching it, I was expecting a high-paced master and commander type of series.

'And, while it's set in roughly the same time period, it's unlike anything I was expecting. It's quite suspenseful and chilling.

'Much thanks to the great acting, casting and details. The ambient soundtrack (R.I.P. Marcus Fjellström) is fantastic and really helps with the eerie feeling.

'There were some moments that made me feel really at unease. Right up there with the top series for sure. Well worth a watch.'

Season one and two of The Terror are available to stream on ITVX.
