Bradley Walsh was reduced to fits of laughter on Beat The Chasers after reading out a multiple-choice question with an unintentionally cheeky twist.

The hit ITV quiz show, which sees contestants face up to five Chasers in the hope of winning big money prizes, opened its latest episode with a round of quick-fire questions.

But it was an awkwardly-worded literary question that left both the beloved host and the audience in stitches. A female contestant was asked: 'In the novel Treasure Island, what term is used to refer to a summons or threat?'

The options flashed up as: 'A. Black spot, B. Beauty spot or C. Wet spot.'

The moment Bradley read out the third choice, he immediately doubled over laughing, burying his face in his hands as the audience erupted around him.

Apologising through giggles, the presenter struggled to compose himself while the contestant calmly selected her answer.

Thankfully, the contestant chose correctly with option A.

The 'black spot' is a notorious symbol in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 adventure novel - a piece of paper, darkened on one side, handed to a pirate to show that they had been condemned by their crew and marked for death.

It's been a dramatic few episodes of Beat The Chasers - with Mark Labbett recently storming off stage after ITV lost £100,000.

After building up a prize pot of £4,000 in the cash builder, Mark upped the ante on the show by offering contestant Gavin the chance to win a six-figure sum if he went up against the five Chasers in just 40 seconds.

Mark said: 'I disagree with my colleagues; I think they've been far too stingy. I'm gonna reduce the time to 40 seconds on our clock… and you'll be playing for £100,000.'

Unfazed by the limited time on the clock, Gavin took Mark up on his offer in a bid to scoop the massive prize pot.

He then went head-to-head with Mark, Paul Sinha (The Sinnerman), Anne Hegerty (The Governess), Jenny Ryan (The Vixen) and Darragh Ennis (The Menace).

While Gavin made some simple errors, like saying that Gomez was the head of The Munsters and not The Addams Family, he soon managed to get into a winning streak of correct answers.

Before leaving, Mark quipped: 'Firstly, well played, Sir. Secondly, I’ll get my coat.'

The celeb was as good as his word and immediately left the stage, failing to return even as the credits rolled.

The Vixen said: 'There's very little we can do. It doesn't matter how many of us are up here when you were getting so many of yours right.

'When you missed the Addams Family one, I thought, "Oh, the wheels might come off here," but you got straight back on it.'

Joking about Gavin's career as a fireman, The Menace added: 'At least you got the pyromancy one right.'

While Gavin did not win the largest ever jackpot on the show, it was one of the few triple-digit sums ever claimed.

Other three-figure winners include celebrity contestants Rick Edwards and Shaun Williamson, who both won a staggering £120,000 for their chosen charities.

Beat The Chasers continues on Saturday at 9pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
