'Thanks to everyone who has watched so far,' Sinéad added, while Sanjeev held up the new script.

In a statement, writer Chris said: 'I am so delighted to have been asked to create another series of Unforgotten, and given the opportunity once again to follow Sunny, Jess and their brilliant team, as they attempt to crack another cold case.

'Unforgotten is a drama that has always asked its audience to lean in, concentrate, and engage with complex ideas, plots and themes, and we are profoundly grateful that such a large and loyal audience continue to enjoy doing exactly that. Roll on series 7!!'

It comes after fans thought the series would be axed after the sixth season, with one saying it was a 'shame'.

A previous instalment saw the detectives work on Gerry Cooper's unsolved murder and assess suspects but caused uproar among some viewers who accused the show of going 'full on woke'.

Many TV watchers took to social media to share their opinions on the crime drama with one posting on X: 'I reckon one more series and this show will get mothballed or even fully axed.

'Unfortunately this one is a real box-ticking leftie crowd-pleaser. Such a shame that mass popularity television invariably descends into safe and bland dross. Sanj and Sinead wasted.'

While another watcher agreed with the 'woke' claims but expressed they they were 'still enjoying' the show.

They penned:  'Up to episode 4 of #Unforgotten Look forward to seeing how all the pieces of the puzzle will fit together. Some great acting.

'Is it too woke? Probably - but I am still enjoying it as, in a few years time when we see repeats, we will consider it an astute look at UK in 2025.'

Unforgotten airs on ITV1 and can be streamed on ITVX.
