1001 Historic sites you must see before you die is part of the best-selling series that also features books, movies and gardens
Here at TravelMail, we're suckers for a good compilation. Which probably explains why we started cooing when we found out about the release of this new book.
Compiled with the help of UNESCO (you know, those charming people who know all about the best parts of the planet), Cassell Illustrated have created a book of the 1001 sites to see before you die. The book, rather unsurprisingly, is entitled, 1001 historic sites to see before you die.
Sounds a bit morbid doesn't it? Well don't worry, because it isn't.
It is however an exciting collection of the most significant historical sites around the globe. It features places that have shaped the culture we see today and that we all should do our best to see before we depart this mortal coil.
Included are sites ranging from the Abbey of Montecassino to the Zipaquira salt mine in Colombia. The book is packed full of entertaining and well informed text and stunning photography of these stunning and significant locations.
Here is a handful of the sights and sites that are featured in the book...
Australia: The Sydney Harbour Bridge - climb to the top for stunning views of the harbour and get a new perspective on a certain opera house...
Egypt: See the Sphinx in Giza - a stunning relic of an ancient civilization that was built in the year c1400BC
Italy: The Sistine Chapel - the official residence of the Pope and the crowning glory of the renaissance. Michaelangelo's ceiling is one of the wonders of the world.
Spain: The Sagrada Familia is the pinnacle of the work of Gaudi. The architect's legacy lies throughout Barcelona and standing proud in the centre of the city is this magnificent cathedral.
China: Dating from 210BC, the Terracotta Army was built to decorate the tomb of the Emperor of Qin to help him rule in the afterlife.
Greece: Built to honour the goddess Athena, the Parthenon is a monument to a deity, film location, and a stunningly crafted remnant of ancient Greece.
England: Blackpool tower is a bastion of the traditional British holiday. Built in 1894, the tower is a listed building inspired by the Eiffel Tower.
Brazil: The statue of Christ the Redeemer at the summit of the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro is one of the new seven wonders of the world and a famous historic site.
The book '1001 historic sites to see before you die' was released on May the 18th by Cassell Illustrated and is priced at £20.
