Paris tour de force

Paris in a day
'We'll always have Paris', said Humphrey Bogart to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca. World capital of romance and oozing style, Paris is its most seductive in warm weather when cafes spill out on to the crowded pavements.
The city's different quarters have retained a strong sense of individual identity. The medieval streets of the Latin Quarter are filled with students, while the elegant Place des Vosges remains the preserve of well heeled ladies trailing yapping dogs.
In the pretentious cafes of St Germain, les philosophes still gather to discuss the meaning of life under thick clouds of Gauloise smoke.
Paris is best seen on foot, for the main sights are all quite close. The route outlined here will take you to the city's best museums and churches, the most colourful streets and will also whisk you to the top of the Eiffel Tower.
At a pinch, it could be done in a single day, but it would be more enjoyable to stretch it over a weekend.
If you find yourself getting footsore, it's easy enough to hop on to the fast, reliable and userfriendly metro.
Buy a 'carnet' of ten tickets when you arrive for 810 (about £7) and it should last your stay.
Tickets are also valid for buses, which I recommend you take for at least part of your route.
I also suggest you buy a museum pass from the departure lounge at Waterloo International (£11 for one day), enabling you to queue-jump at the busier museums.
