Q.
My sons would love to try big game fishing, maybe even landing a shark. Where can we go to do this? We don't want to charter a boat ourselves; we'd rather be taken out by experienced fishermen. Valerie Parry, Kent.
A. There's good blue and hammerhead shark fishing in the waters around the Portuguese island of Madeira - spring and autumn are the best seasons. Some of the catch is tagged and released so as not to deplete stocks. Several local operators will provide a fully staffed boat for four anglers with all tackle, bait and refreshments included, for £444 for a whole day, £307 for a half day. Call 00 351 291 222667, or go to www.madeira-island.com/deepsea for details. Big game fishing can also be built into a holiday. Somak Holidays can arrange fishing as part of a package to Kenya, with accommodation at the Southern Palms Hotel on the south coast of Mombasa.
A week in March, including three half-days' fishing (likely catches include marlin, tuna and barracuda) is from £779 per person (two sharing). The price includes flights, transfers, seven nights' half-board accommodation and the big game fishing. Call 020 8423 3000 or visit www.somak.co.uk for further information.
