The Irish first landed on Australia's shores in the late 18th century but the St Patrick's Day tradition almost completely petered out until a whole new influx of Irish landed on Australia's shores in the 1970s.
Now almost all the major cities, including Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane enjoy Irish celebrations.
Sydney in recent years has held mini Irish film festivals, 'Moore Street' markets and live music, and there's also a traditional St Patrick's Day mass held at the city's St Mary's cathedral.
For a drop of the black stuff, try Scruffy Murphy's on the corner of Goulburn and George St in Sydney, and Bridie O'Reilly's on Little Collins Street in Melbourne.
