Northern Spain damaged by oil spill
Until last year Spain was home to a huge 419 flagged beaches and 96 marinas, but the oil tanker spillage severely damaged much of the west coast, reducing the number of beaches that qualified.
However, the outlook on Spain's east coast is brighter than ever. There are over 150 beaches that pass the test in Andalucia, Catalonia and the Valencia region.
Majorca and smaller neighbour Menorca share in excess of 60 certified clean beaches and marinas between them.
The four major Canary Isles - Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura - have slightly fewer, which reflects their smaller size but they still manage 29 excellent beaches.
