The slopes of Cortina d'Ampezzo
The cheapest option for evening meals is to pre-book dinner in the hostel for only £5.50. You can eat in the village for under £20. There is a pizzeria (pizzas from £8 to £12) and some medium-priced Swiss restaurants.
On Sunday we skied until 4pm, then travelled back, arriving in Gatwick at 11pm. It was a long day, but worth it for the extra hours on the slopes.
The resort is small enough to be easily negotiable in the time frame of a long weekend, and offers good quality skiing in a picturesque setting for £400.

Host to the Winter Olympics in 1956, Cortina d'Ampezzo is still Italy's most chic resort. Hordes of fur and diamond-clad grandes dames haunt the designer boutiques on the famous Corso Italia.
So how to get there? The first pleasant surprise is that the resort airport is Venice.
I found a cheap flight on the internet from London Stansted, leaving at 7.30am, which made for an early start but meant we could ski on the Friday afternoon, have two full days over the weekend, and fly back at Monday lunchtime.
