Where is it?
The capital of the Styrian province in southern Austria.
Transfer time to city centre 15 minutes by car.
Best known for? In line with the rest of the country, Graz has breathtaking alpine scenery. Thick deep green forests, mountains that soar up to 3,000m and fresh-water lakes.
The natural beauty has been enhanced by the town's architecture - tall Baroque buildings, landscaped gardens and historic monuments abound. And this year Graz revels in the title of European Capital of Culture.
Main attractions... Any photo of Graz is dominated by the Schlossberg, the castle that overlooks the city below. A thirty-minute calf-burning trek rewards the effort with stunning alpine views. The Mausoleum and the neighbouring cathedral between Burgergasse and Hofgasse are the pick of the city's sights though all of the old town has been named a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Avoid if you can Getting lost. Though the Schloss is always reliably in view, once you're in the maze of cafes, bars and restaurants below, you can soon lose your bearings.
