Spring skiing in Europe
Last updated at 15:05 27 March 2003
The principal late season skiing resorts in Europe are found in the Haute Savoie region of France, some of which remain open until the end of the first week in May.
Val d'Isere/Tignes (1850m and 2100m respectively), a curious mixture of old Alpine villages and ugly modernism, is one of the principal destinations - not least because of its vibrant night life. (www.valdisere.com; www.tignes.net) Val Thorens, startlingly functional but blessed with sublime skiing is another (www.valthorens.com).
The more traditional resorts of Les Deux Alpes (www.les2alpes.com). and Chamonix/Argentiere also offer late skiing into the beginning of May. (www.chamonix.com).
The Austrian resorts of Obergurgl and St Anton remain open until May 1. In Italy, skiing continues on the Aosta valley side of the Matterhorn at Cervinia until the same time, with the Swiss border link to Zermatt's Kleine Matterhorn area remaining open. In Sweden it is possible to ski under the midnight sun at Riksgransen in Lapland, the world's most northerly resort, from late May to late June.
There are 13 miles of trails for all standards, the lifts stay open until 1am and the resort has plenty of other facilities on offer.
There is a gourmet restaurant and spa at the widely recommended Riksgransen Hotel. (0046 980 40080, www.riksgransen.nu; www.visit-sweden.com).
Return flights to Stockholm cost from £130 with SAS (0845 6072 7727).
