Different types of safari
Last updated at 15:02 06 September 2002
There are many permutations of safari to consider - from jeep game drives with accommodation in luxury lodge or permanent tented camps to more active safaris such as moving between temporary camps or exploring the bush in a mokorro (dug out canoe), on foot or on horseback.
More unusual safaris also include gorilla or chimpanzee tracking in Uganda, a rail safari from Pretoria to Durban with game drives along the way or, for a price, an elephant-back safari in Botswana, seeing the Okavango Delta from the back of a 10ft tall African elephant.
If you want to add even more excitement to your safari, look out for speciaol occurrences such as total eclipses that can only be viewed from the country you plan to visit.
Many safari companies run special "eclipse safaris" around these times, with regular good views in countries including South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique.
