The most famous parador in Spain - and the hardest to get into - is found within the Alhambra grounds in a converted monastery.
The finest rooms look out onto the quiet interior courtyard and are always booked up far in advance. Expect to pay over €200 a night.
Or just pop in for a drink on the spectacular terrace.
Hotel Alhambra Palace (Pena Partida 2, Tel: 00349 58 22 14 68)
Close to the Alhambra, with wonderful views over the city, the Hotel Alhambra Palace is the luxury choice for those that can't get into the parador.
The basement contains the neo-Moorish theatre where poet Federico Garcia Lorca and guitarist Andres Segovia used to perform in the 20s. Doubles from €140 a night.
Reina Cristina (Calle Tablas 4, Tel: 00349 58 25 32 11)
Another of Lorca's old haunts, this is where the poet and playwright spent his last days before being arrested during the Spanish Civil War.
The hotel is built within the walls of a traditional 19th century townhouse, just five minutes away from the Cathedral Quarter. Doubles from €96 a night.
Casa del Alijarife (Placeta de la Cruz Verde 2, Tel: 00349 58 22 24 25)
Located in the Albaicin, near the Plaza Santa Ana, this family-run casa has a well cared-for and welcoming atmosphere.
