Banks and ATMs:
There are cash machines on every street corner, as well as two or three at the train station.
Getting Around: The old town is easy to negotiate on foot, but you'll need to take the efficient public transport system to explore further afield.
There are two metro lines, two tram lines and a bus network which link the city centre with the suburbs.
Tickets cost 1.15 euros, or you can buy a carnet of 10 for 10 euros.
There is a 'Pass Famille' for families of up to 8 members, which costs 4.60 euros but is only available at weekends and holidays. An individual day pass costs 3.35 euros.
Post office: 1 Boulevard Carnot; with another at 8 Place de la République, and a third on the first level of the enormous Euralille Shopping Centre (right next to the train station).
Telephone codes: All telephone numbers listed here must be dialled in full, even within Lille.
To call France from the UK, dial 00 33 and drop the first 0 from the telephone number. To ring the UK from France, dial 00 44, and, again, drop the first 0 from the number.
Tourist information: There is a tourist information booth at Lille train station, which also provides an accommodation-finding service if you arrive without a reservation (open Mon-Sun 9am-1pm and 2pm-8pm.).
The main office is in the Palais Rihour, Place Rihour, tel: 03 20 21 94 21, www.lilletourism.com
The tourist office has started publishing a useful map of the Braderie in recent years but they get snapped up quickly so it might be worth asking for one in advance.
Tourist Passes: The Citypass offers access to the city's monuments plus unlimited use of the transport system and costs 14.50 euros for one day, 25.10 for two days and 31.20 for three days.
