Part of the delight of the Braderie is the sheer number and variety of food stalls which appear on the streets and really, you should be doing your bit to get that mussel mountain a bit higher.
Still, if you want sit-down dining, the Braderie is also a good excuse to sample some fine French cuisine in a classic Gallic restaurant.
Prices are for three courses without wine. See also the Jardin du Cloitre at the Aliance Golden Tulip (under Where to Stay).
L'Huitrière, 3 rue des Chats-Bossus, Tel: 03 20 55 43 41, Fax: 03 20 55 23 10. One of the most celebrated dining places in Lille, this fabulous Art Deco fishmonger and restaurant is the perfect place to splash out. The menu features the freshest shellfish (including oysters, bien sûr) although there are plenty of meaty local dishes too and the wine list is exceptional. 4060 euros.
Au Gré du Vin, 20 rue Péterinck, Tel 03 20 55 42 51, Fax: 03 20 55 42 51. Delightful little bistrot in Lille's old quarter, serving beautifully prepared traditional French cuisine at very reasonable prices. Open lunchtimes only and reservations are essential. Closed Mon. 1220 euros.
Restaurant les 3 Brasseurs, 22 Place de la Gare 03 20 06 46 25. Excellent beers brewed on the premises, and a good menu of brasserie favourites from grilled meats to salads. Hearty portions and a lively atmosphere. 1015 euros for lunch.
Restaurant Aux Moules, 34 rue de Béthune, Tel: 03 20 57 12 46. This restaurant was established back in 1930 and usually manages to win the competition for the pile of mussel shells at the Braderie. There's a good selection of fixed price menus, charming retro décor, and cheerful staff. Lunch from 10 euros, dinner more expensive.
