Going it alone

The Bordeaux region is lush and green, scattered with rosy medieval villages and ancient castles.
There's nothing quite like the sight of thousands of vines snaking endlessly across the hills - except perhaps the glass of velvety claret which awaits you.
If you choose to travel to Bordeaux on your own (flying is considerably cheaper now that Buzz fly to Bordeaux from Stansted at least once a day), tours can be arranged through the Bordeaux tourist office or the CIVB, both on the Cours du XXX Juillet in the centre of the city (click here for more details).
A staggering 9,000 châteaux produce wine in the region and not all are open to the public, but in many towns, such as Pauillac or Saint-Emilion, the local tourist information offices will arrange tours of the surrounding châteaux.
Note that many châteaux have set opening hours and tours can get filled up quickly, so it's best to arrange them as far in advance as possible.
